The major take from The Mind-Gut Connection was how much research is yet to be done on how similar and intertwined our brains and digestive systems truly are when it comes to decision making, memory, cognitive ability and forecasting illnesses like Alzheimer’s and dementia.

As someone who spent a lot of time and money healing my own leaky gut, I was really looking forward to this and walked away with a much deeper understanding of what I went through first hand, but also a better plan for how to both maintain and appreciate that health.

The mental clarity that comes with a properly functioning gastrointestinal tract is what allows us to better hone in on what we consider to be intuition. When all cylinders are firing properly it’s our collective knowledge and senses turning up the volume on information we’ve literally and figuratively digested.

At a number of points the book is a bit depressing in the respect that so much of our current microbiome was out of our hands and built for us by our mothers, what they ate, how we were birthed and then nursed. It was an eye opener for anyone yet to have kids and how to prepare, but also what can be done as an adult to adjust where possible.

It was a quick enough read that was a huge building block in my ongoing education of how to manage my thyroid and overall health.
